Public health research: ethics review pathways

This pathway tool helps clarify the route to which type of ethics review process you may be required to follow. It is divided by organisation type: NHS, university, and, local authority, voluntary community and social enterprise sector or other organisation. Regardless of the organisation type, it is recommended to start at the top of the review process and answer questions sequentially. 

When using the decision tool, note that:

• a teal rectangle indicates an action in response to a decision question

• a purple rectangle indicates additional contextual information to consider

A final note:

It is important to note that the pathway tool is not exhaustive. An effort has been made to simplify the process to provide a top-level view, but there may be variations in this process that are not accounted for in this tool.
